Accounts
Your accounts are where your money actually lives. Envelopes are the plan, accounts are the bank. Every transaction you log touches an account, and that account's balance moves with it.
TL;DR
An account is a place that holds money you own or money you owe. Asset accounts like checking, savings, and cash live inside named groups that represent an institution such as Chase or Cash. Liability accounts such as credit cards, loans, and other debts sit separately outside any group. You browse them on the "Accounts" tab, where assets appear grouped and liabilities appear in their own "Liabilities" section split into "Credit Cards", "Loans", and "Other Liabilities". Each account shows two balances, "Cleared" and "Working", so you can see what the bank has cleared and what you actually have to spend. Tap any account to see its chart, its transactions, and for credit cards how much is due and when.

Where to find it: Accounts tab → grouped list of assets and liabilities
Where your accounts live
Tap "Accounts" in the tab strip along the top. It is the fourth tab, after Scheduled.
What you see from top to bottom:
- An Assets & Debt trend card at the top showing your combined asset and liability trajectory:
- Dual headline metrics for Assets and Debt with directional change badges across the chosen window.
- A time-range selector with 1W, 1M, 3M, YTD, and 1Y presets.
- A dual-line chart comparing assets against debt up to today, with hold-and-drag scrubbing to inspect balances on any date.
- When you type in the search bar to filter accounts, the trend card automatically hides so search results stay front and center.
- A collapsible "Assets" header with a combined cleared total that adds up every asset account you hold.
- One section per institution group, separated by thin dividers. Each group shows its uppercase name, an inline collapse arrow, and its combined cleared balance at the top, with its accounts listed directly underneath. Each asset row shows an icon, the account name, its subtype ("Checking", "Savings", "Investment", or "Other") underneath, and its cleared balance on the right. Tap the group name to see every transaction across the whole group, tap the arrow beside the name to collapse or expand the group, or tap a row to open that account.
- When you have any debts, a collapsible "Liabilities" section follows with its combined cleared total and up to three subsections: "Credit Cards", "Loans", and "Other Liabilities". The "Credit Cards" header adds a "USAGE" column label over a three-column readout on each card that has a credit limit: utilization percentage, a fixed-width progress bar, and the cleared balance. Empty subsections stay hidden.
- The top bar has a search field to filter the list in place, and the bottom-right action cluster has "Add" plus a three-dot menu for "Reorder" and "Show archived".
All totals are calculated live from the accounts underneath, so they never drift.

Where to find it: Accounts tab → use Search to filter, or tap "Add" to create a new account or group
Two kinds of accounts, money you hold and money you owe
Every account you can post transactions to is one of two kinds. You never transact against a group itself, only against a specific account.
Asset accounts hold money you own. They always belong to a group. The group is the institution that holds them.
Liability accounts hold money you owe. They are never grouped. The app keeps them in a flat list and builds the three liability sections on screen from your debts.
| Kind | Examples | Where it lives | What a transfer to it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Checking | Everyday spending, cash | Inside an account group | Internal move, no envelope needed |
| Savings | Interest-bearing savings | Inside an account group | Internal move, no envelope needed |
| Investment | Stocks, funds | Inside an account group | Internal move, no envelope needed. This type starts off budget by default |
| Other (asset) | Any other asset | Inside an account group | Internal move, no envelope needed |
| Credit Card | Card balance you owe | Under "Credit Cards" | Can optionally be tagged with an envelope as spending |
| Loan | Loan balance you owe | Under "Loans" | Can optionally be tagged with an envelope as spending |
| Other (liability) | Any other debt | Under "Other Liabilities" | Can optionally be tagged with an envelope as spending |
When you pick a type, the picker tells you the same thing in plain words. Transfers to an asset are not categorized. Transfers to a debt can optionally be categorized as spending.
Are these part of your budget?
Every account has an "Include in budget" toggle in its settings.
- Asset accounts start included in your budget, except Investment which starts off budget because that money sits outside your spendable pool.
- Debt accounts start outside your budget, except Credit Card which starts included. That is intentional. You allocate spending to your regular envelopes when you buy something, so paying the card later is just moving money.
- When an account is outside your budget, money sent to it leaves the budget and you can tag that transfer with an envelope to say where it went.
Blocked toggle. If you try to include an account in your budget while it still has a transfer that uses an envelope, the app stops you with "Can't include in budget" and the message "This account has a transfer that uses an envelope, so it can't be included in the budget." Remove or clear the envelope from that transfer first.
Balances, what the bank cleared and what you have to spend
Every account keeps two balances:
- "Cleared" is what the bank has officially cleared.
- "Working" is cleared plus pending. It is what you actually have to spend right now.
Both start from the balance you set and move only when you add, edit, delete, or change the cleared status of a transaction. Pending transactions affect your working balance but not your cleared balance. Placeholder transactions affect neither until you fill them in. Group and app wide totals are just the sum of the accounts underneath.
Row badges and indicators help you spot what is affecting those totals:
- The cleared balance is the headline number on every row and header.
- "USAGE" on credit cards with a limit shows your utilization percent and a compact progress bar right beside the cleared balance.
- "LIMIT" appears as a warning or error pill under the card name when credit utilization reaches 80% or 100%.
- "DUE" appears as a warning pill under the card name when a statement payment is due soon.
- "Low Balance" means the account is expected to run short for an upcoming scheduled transaction.
- "Pending" and "Placeholder" pills appear under the account name when the account holds uncleared or placeholder transactions, and also show as banners on the details page.

Where to find it: Accounts tab → each row shows its cleared balance and badges for pending, Low Balance, and LIMIT
Tapping in, account details
Tap any account, or a group header for the combined view, to open its details. You will see a chart pinned at the top and a paginated list of every transaction that touches that account or group, newest first and grouped by date.

Where to find it: Accounts tab → tap any account or group header → details with chart and transactions
The "Balance outlook" chart
Title: "Balance outlook". When there is not enough activity it shows "Not enough activity to chart" with an info button labeled "How to read this chart".
Up to four lines can appear, each with its own legend entry:
- "Balance" is your closing balance at the end of each day.
- "Last 3 weeks" is net money in or out each day, income adds and spending subtracts.
- "Previous 3 weeks" is the same daily net flow from the three weeks before that, shown dashed for comparison.
- "Projection" is the forecast, your current closing balance plus scheduled transactions and your typical weekday flow from the last three months, shown dotted.
Group views combine every member account into one shared line.
Balance summary, the numbers under the chart
Right below the chart you see:
- "Cleared balance" described as "Money the bank has officially cleared."
- "Working balance" described as "Cleared plus pending transactions."
For credit cards with a statement cycle set up, up to three more rows appear:
- "Current due" described as "What you currently owe on this card." with the next payment date, for example "Payment due Aug 28". This is the net cleared activity in the current statement window. Payments into the card are not counted here because they settle the previous statement.
- "Paid toward this due" described as "Payments made since the statement closed." This counts cleared payments into the card made after the last statement closed and up to today.
- "Last payment" described as "When you last paid this card." This is the most recent cleared payment into the card. Pending payments are ignored.
The statement window is always the most recently closed statement. If your statement day is the 1st and today is August 24, the window is July 2 through August 1, not August 1 through September 1.
A dedicated credit usage bar sits between the chart and the summary on credit cards. It shows your outstanding balance against your "Credit limit" with a percent and a used and limit label.
Banners and flags
Below the summary you may see one or more banners:
- "Finish card setup" with "Add this card's credit limit, statement day and due day to unlock usage tracking and payment due reminders." This appears when a credit card is missing its limit or cycle days. Tapping it scrolls you to the "Credit card details" section in settings. See Credit Card Management for the full setup flow.
- Payment due banner, a yellow warning when a payment is approaching:
- "Payment due. Due today. Reconcile transactions to have an accurate due amount and pay early to prevent charges."
- "Payment due. Due tomorrow. Reconcile transactions to have an accurate due amount and pay early to prevent charges."
- "Payment due. Due in 5 days. Reconcile transactions to have an accurate due amount and pay early to prevent charges." where the number of days updates to match your due date.
- This turns green and is labeled "Paid early" when you have already paid enough toward what is due.
- "This account has pending transactions." or "This account has placeholder transactions." Each has its own tap target that opens Advanced Search filtered to that status.
Credit cards, limits, statements, and due dates
Credit cards get extra fields inside "Credit card details" on the account settings screen. You only see these when the account type is "Credit Card":
- "Credit limit" is the card's limit and drives the "Credit usage" bar.
- "Statement day" is the day of the month from 1 to 31 when the statement closes. Pick it with "Select day".
- "Payment due day" is the day of the month the payment is due.
- "Remind before due" with "Get a reminder before your payment is due" lets you turn on a monthly reminder and choose "Days before due", which defaults to 3. When turned on, saving the card creates or keeps that reminder.
That card also has a "Credit card envelope" entry on the same settings page. Because credit cards are included in your budget, the app creates a dedicated envelope for the card to track the spending you make on it before you pay it off. The row shows the linked envelope's name, or "This card's envelope is created when you save it" before the first save. Tap it to open that envelope's settings when it exists. The envelope is managed by the account so you cannot delete it on its own.

Where to find it: Accounts tab → open a Credit Card → three dot menu → "Account settings" → "Credit card details"
Loans, repayment strategy
Loans have their own entry in settings: "Repayment strategy".
Tapping it opens "Repayment strategy" with "Set up a monthly repayment plan" where you set how the loan should be paid down:
- "Current balance" is the loan's outstanding balance and is read only. Tap the principal field to adjust it through "Adjust Balance" instead, since the principal is the balance.
- "Principal" is the loan amount, edited only through balance adjustment.
- "Annual interest rate (%)" is the APR as a plain percent, for example 5.5.
- "Payment frequency" lets you choose how often you pay, such as "Monthly" or "Weekly".
- "Compounding" lets you choose how interest compounds, such as "Monthly", "Quarterly", or "Annually".
- "Payment count" is the total number of payments over the term, for example 60 for a five year monthly loan.
- "Monthly payment" is a live preview of the computed payment. Saving keeps this plan with the loan.
The read only "Repayment details" summary under the entry in settings shows the saved payment and options so you can confirm at a glance.

Where to find it: Accounts tab → open a Loan → three dot menu → "Account settings" → "Repayment strategy"
Settings for any account
Open any account's details and use the three dot menu to choose "Account settings". For a group, that same menu shows "Account group settings". The title reads "Account settings" when editing and "New account" or "New account group" when creating.
Here is every control you may see and what it does:
Name, color and icon, and note
- "Name" opens an "Account Name" dialog. Names are trimmed and cannot be blank.
- "Color & icon" shows a preview tile that opens the shared color and icon picker.
- "Note" opens an "Account Note" dialog with up to four lines of free text. When present, the note appears on the details page.
Type
A dropdown that picks the specific kind of account. For assets choose "Checking", "Savings", "Investment", or "Other". For liabilities choose "Credit Card", "Loan", or "Other". Changing the type changes which details section appears below, such as credit card fields or the loan repayment summary, and which "Adjust Balance" description you see.
"Include in budget"
This toggle appears for asset accounts. Label: "Include in budget".
- On shows "Transfers between budget accounts just move money, no envelope needed."
- Off shows "Money sent here leaves the budget and can be categorized with an envelope."
For debt accounts the same row is shown disabled and greyed out. It reflects the stored value, on for credit cards and off for loans and other debts, but you cannot flip it. That behavior is fixed.
"Adjust Balance"
Shown only when editing an existing account, never for groups or before the first save. It is the first row on the screen, above "Color & icon".
- The label is always "Adjust Balance". The subtitle changes by type:
- Most assets: "Set this account's balance"
- Loan: "Set this account's principal loan amount"
- Credit Card: "Set this credit card's outstanding balance"
Tapping it opens the dedicated "Adjust Balance" form. It shows the current cleared balance, lets you type a new target balance, and previews the difference between the target and current in green or red. You can enter a negative balance if an asset is overdrawn. A zero difference disables Save. Saving posts a hidden adjustment transaction so the account history stays intact.

Where to find it: Accounts tab → open an account → three dot menu → "Account settings" → "Adjust Balance"
"Close account" and "Reopen account"
A switch at the bottom of settings.
- "Close account" is described as "Exclude this account from balances and totals". Closed accounts do not accept new transactions and their balances stop counting toward any total, including group totals and home screen totals.
- Flip it back to "Reopen account" to bring it back.
This is different from archiving. A closed account is still visible in the list, just excluded from the math.
"Archive account" and "Unarchive account" in the three dot menu
Found in the overflow menu while editing, never during creation.
- "Archive account" confirms with "Archive account? This hides the account from the Accounts tab and account pickers, but keeps its transactions and history. You can still view it from the Accounts tab → Show archived."
- "Unarchive account" restores it.
Archiving is a visibility change, not a deletion. Use it to declutter without losing history.
"Delete account"
A destructive row near the bottom when editing, shown in red with "Permanently delete this account and all its transactions" underneath.
- It confirms with "Delete account? This will permanently delete the account and all its transactions. This can't be undone."
- For a credit card that has its own envelope, the message adds that its managed envelope will also be removed.
- This is permanent. Prefer "Archive account" if you want to keep the history.
Adding an account or a group
On the "Accounts" tab, tap "Add" in the floating pill. A small sheet appears with two rows:
- "Add Account" to create a specific account.
- "Add Account Group" to create a new named institution for assets.

Where to find it: Accounts tab → tap "Add" → choose "Add Account" or "Add Account Group"
"Add Account Group" then "New account group"
You just give it a "Name". Creating the group never asks for accounts, you add accounts to it next. New groups appear last in your custom order and are shown even when empty so you can see what you just made.
"Add Account" then "New account"
The form adapts by what you choose:
- "Account type" lets you pick "Asset" or "Liability" first.
- "Account group" is required for assets so you pick which group the account belongs to. If no group exists yet, the screen shows "Create an account group first to add an asset account" and sends you to create one.
- "Color & icon" is the preview tile.
- The type dropdown shows the asset or liability options listed above, with a short description for each.
- "Initial balance" is optional. Type what the account holds right now and it becomes the starting balance, so you do not have to adjust it after saving. Leave it empty to start at zero. For a debt, type the amount you owe.
- For "Credit Card" the "Credit card details" section appears right in the form, with "Credit limit", "Statement day", "Payment due day", and "Remind before due" with "Days before due". For "Loan" the "Repayment strategy" entry is available after creation.
- The "Include in budget" toggle is live for assets and shown as a disabled display for debts.
- "Note" is optional.
Tap the save checkmark in the pill to create it. You will see "Account created" or "Account group created" and the new row animates in so you can spot it right away. New accounts start at the "Initial balance" you entered, or at zero if you left it empty, always in your budget's currency.
You can also move an asset to a different group after creation. Open the account for editing and use the same "Account group" picker to reassign it without deleting it.
Summary
| What you see | What it means |
|---|---|
| "Assets" vs "Liabilities" | Money you own (grouped by institution) vs money you owe (flat list). |
| "Cleared" vs "Working" | What the bank cleared vs what you actually have to spend. |
| "Include in budget" | On is an internal transfer. Off can carry an envelope; blocked when an envelope transfer already uses the account. |
| "Close" / "Archive" / "Delete" | Exclude from totals, hide from lists, or remove permanently with all transactions. |
| Credit card rows | Extra fields for limit, statement and due days, managed envelope, and due banners. |
| Loan rows | Repayment strategy and principal, edited through Adjust Balance. |
Amounts are always stored as whole cents and displayed in your currency. You never need to think about how they are stored.
Sample use cases
-
You opened a new checking account at a new bank. On the "Accounts" tab tap "Add" then "Add Account Group", name it "New Bank", and save. Then tap "Add" then "Add Account", pick "Asset", choose that group, set the type to "Checking", pick a color and icon, type what the account holds in "Initial balance", and save. It appears under that group with the balance you entered.
-
Your credit card statement just closed and you want to know what you owe. Tap that card's row under "Credit Cards". Above the transaction list you will see "Current due" with a note like "Payment due Aug 28", "Paid toward this due" for any payments since the statement closed, and "Last payment" for the most recent payment ever. If the card is missing its limit or days, the "Finish card setup" banner takes you straight to the "Credit card details" fields.
-
A pending charge just posted and you are not sure what has cleared. Open that account's details and check the two summary rows, "Cleared balance" and "Working balance". The banner "This account has pending transactions." links to a filtered Advanced Search view. When the bank clears the charge, mark it cleared and both balances will match.
-
A loan's balance is wrong after an import. Open the loan's row, open the menu, choose "Account settings", then tap "Adjust Balance" where the subtitle reads "Set this account's principal loan amount". Type the correct principal, check the difference preview, and save. Then open "Repayment strategy" with the new principal, set "Annual interest rate (%)", "Payment frequency", "Compounding", and "Payment count", and confirm the live "Monthly payment" looks right.
-
You want a transfer to count as spending. Open the destination account's settings and make sure "Include in budget" is off, which shows "Money sent here leaves the budget and can be categorized with an envelope." Save. Now when you create a transfer to it from Transactions, the envelope picker is available. If the toggle is blocked, find the existing transfer that carries an envelope to this account and remove its envelope first.
-
An old savings account is cluttering the list. Open its settings, open the three dot menu, choose "Archive account", and confirm. It disappears from the "Accounts" tab and every picker. Turn on "Show archived" in the Accounts tab menu to see it again, or open it and choose "Unarchive account". Only use "Delete account" when you truly want the account and all its transactions gone, that action cannot be undone.
