A tag is a label you can attach to transactions (and to portions of split transactions) to find them later. Tags slice across envelopes and accounts, so you can group related transactions no matter where they live.

TL;DR

Tags are labels you stick on transactions to find and group them later. Unlike an envelope (a bucket of money for a plan), a tag is just a label, it doesn't hold money or change your budget. Add tags when you save a transaction, then filter by tag to pull up everything that carries it. Split portions can each carry their own tags.

What are they for?

  • Find things, filter by your "Holiday" tag and every tagged trip shows up in one list.
  • Cross-cut reporting, envelope and accounts organize where money went; tags organize why. The same transaction can carry several tags.
  • Build habits, tag discretionary spending so it's easy to review later.

Tags are different from envelopes: an envelope is a bucket of money for a plan; a tag is just a label for finding and grouping. Envelope, account, and tag all coexist on one transaction.

How to add a tag

  1. From the More tab, open Tags and create the tags you want (each with its own color and icon).
  2. When adding or editing a transaction, tap the tag field and pick one or more tags.
  3. Save, the transaction now carries those tags.

Using tags

On the Transactions screen you can filter by tag to see everything with a particular label. Tapping a tag also takes you to a list of every transaction that carries it.

Tagging split transactions

When you split a transaction, each portion can carry its own tags, so in a supermarket split, the groceries portion and the household portion can be tagged differently even though they're part of one purchase.

  • Holiday spending. Tag every trip-related transaction "Holiday", and next summer you can see it all in one list.
  • Reviewing discretionary spend. Tag "Guilt-free fun" so your monthly review is easy to pull up.
  • Shared accounts. Tag transactions "Household" on a shared budget to see what's personal and what's joint, even when they share an envelope.
