Transaction statuses

A transaction's status tells you where it is in its lifecycle, from a planned note in the future, all the way to a transaction you've verified against your bank statement.

TL;DR

Four statuses: Placeholder (planned, counts for nothing), Pending (has happened but hasn't cleared, counts), Cleared (final, counts), and Reconciled (you've matched it to your bank statement, also counts). The big question every status answers: does this transaction count toward my balances and budget today?

The four statuses

Placeholder

A planned transaction. You want to record that money will move, or that it should move, but nothing has happened yet.

Doesn't count. Placeholders never affect account balances or budget totals. They're just notes for the future.

Good for: remembering an upcoming bill, noting an expected deposit, planning money that hasn't arrived yet.

Pending

The transaction has happened but hasn't officially cleared yet.

This is the "waiting to process" state, like when you tap your card at a shop and the charge appears as "pending" at the bank before it's final.

Counts. Pending transactions are included in account balances and budget totals, so your numbers are realistic even while things are still processing.

Cleared

The transaction is final. The money has fully moved.

Counts. This is the normal, everyday state for transactions that are done and settled.

Reconciled

The transaction has been matched to your bank statement, a stricter version of cleared. When you reconcile an account, transactions that line up with your statement are marked as reconciled.

Counts. A reconciled transaction is also considered cleared. Reconciled isn't a separate bucket, it just means "this one I've verified."

Summary

StatusCounts toward totals?What it means
PlaceholderNoPlanned for the future, nothing happened yet
PendingYesHappened, but hasn't officially cleared
ClearedYesFinal, the money has fully moved
ReconciledYesMatched to your bank statement (also cleared)

A transaction typically moves Placeholder → Pending → Cleared, and optionally → Reconciled once you verify it against your statement.

See Transaction badges for what the status pills and other row badges look like.

Sample use cases

  • Recording a bill you know is coming. Use Placeholder to plan ahead, it won't change your numbers until it actually happens.
  • Just spent something still processing. Leave it Pending so your balance still reflects it.
  • It's settled and done. Mark it Cleared.
  • Reconciling your account against the bank. Confirm it as Reconciled.
